Gluten Intolerance

Permeable Bowel or Leaky Gut Syndrome

When left untreated, gluten intolerance will actually tears holes, somewhere in the lining of the intestine. This is called Permeable Bowl or Leaky Gut Syndrome, and allows whatever is in the intestine (including bacteria) to enter the abdominal cavity and bloodstream. The body’s immune system must work very hard to eliminate the foreign, toxic material. Debilitating symptoms will result.

Celiac Disease

And if these symptoms are left untreated, gluten intolerance will lead to Celiac Disease, where the gluten will flatten out the tiny villi in the small intestine. These villi are tiny finger-like protrusions that provide most of the surface area for the body to absorb nutrition. So if they are flat, minimal or no absorption takes place, and the body will fail to thrive.

Celiac Disease was the first type of gluten sensitivity for which diagnostic testing was devised, in the 1940’s. Although Celiac testing is still used in many clinics as a first test for gluten intolerance, it picks up only a small percentage (approximately 0.5% of the population) of gluten intolerant people, who are actually Celiac.

Most gluten intolerant people test negative (or inconclusive) for Celiac Disease. They are then labeled Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitive, and may be as many as 15% of all people, or 1 in 7. Because of the inconclusivness of the Celiac testing, many gluten intolerant people are misdiagnosed, and miss out on discovering the simple and drug-free remedy of a gluten-free diet, for a dramatic recovery.

Gluten intolerance is easily identified with the tried and proven elimination diet. Doctors know that elimination diets work, and use them to confirm or disprove investigations like blood tests and biopsies.

The only treatment for any gluten intolerance is to alter eating habits to exclude gluten: a gluten-free diet.

Other Symptoms of Gluten Intolerance

Many people suffer from headaches, mouth ulcers, weight gain or weight loss, poor immunity to disease, and skin problems like dermatitis and eczema.

Because the symptoms overlap with many other ailments, gluten intolerance can be missed or misdiagnosed.
