The episode starts off with a discussion of a new syndrome known as “Metabolic Syndrome X”. Martin explains how the word “syndrome” itself delineates diseases which our current medical establishment can not easily classify. Most normal diseases that one would go to a doctor for are easily classifiable in that they have one cause which when removed cures the disease.
This is not the case with Metabolic Syndrome X, which is used as a starting point for a discussion of the drawbacks of our western medical system. The problem with this system is that it tends to treat trauma and emergencies really well, but is less successful at looking at causes of these illnesses and treating these causes.
As Martin goes on to articulate very well, there is a great distance between simply wanting to live after a life-changing accident and achieving the type of health we all strive for and hope to one day achieve. It is these area that Martin feels could benefit greatly from a more holistic approach.
