And the Evil Antacid Myth…

When you take antacids, the contents of your stomach become more alkaline, and move along to the next stage of your digestive tract, your small intestine. This pushes through under-digested material that is going to complicate your life later. It will support the growth of unfriendly microbes in your gut, and give rise to weight issues, liver problems and worse.
The more antacids you take, the MORE heartburn/indigestion you have!
This is called dose-dependent rebound hyperacidity.
Antacids can also cause:
- Antacids that contain magnesium may cause diarrhea.
- Antacids that contain aluminum hydroxide may cause constipation.
- Milk-alkali syndrome (high blood calcium from taking too much calcium).
If untreated, milk-alkali syndrome may lead to kidney failure or death.
The Truth: LOW Stomach Acid Causes Heartburn!
Cold, Hard Fact:
Declining mineral reserves will cause you to produce less stomach acid (HCl with pepsin). Stomach acid is necessary for good digestion, and if you do not have enough (many don’t), you will feel heartburn.
To produce sufficient stomach acid that is necessary for good digestion, and to avoid heartburn, you need to have a good supply of chlorides, iodine, zinc, and vitamins B1 and B6.
With age, we all have less reserves. A conservative estimate is that 75% of people over 50 do not have enough stomach acid (HCl/pepsin) available for proper digestion. That’s 3 out of 4 around your table!
To build your digestive power you need ample supply of the Chloride ion – from sodium chloride, potassium chloride, or magnesium chloride, all easily accessible. Your stomach will make the hydrochloric acid on demand from the stored reserves of ionic chlorides, as long as the other nutrients are also available.
