Most people will repeat the line that if you have high blood pressure, you should avoid salt. This advice is parroted by doctors, magazines, reporters, and nutritionists.
But the fact is, this advice is a dangerous myth. Unbiased research shows that for the vast majority of people, natural whole salt consumption does not raise blood pressure. To the contrary, avoiding salt can be detrimental to your health. It does make a critical difference which kind of salt you put on your food. Using refined industrial salt is indeed potentially harmful to your health. But that’s not the case with whole salt.

The Great Salt-Blood Pressure Hoax

Unless you are sodium-sensitive, chances are your high blood pressure stems from a lack of the correct proportions of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Studies of sea salt back up this theory.

One study in the Journal of Human Hypertension concluded that simply by substituting table salt for potassium-magnesium-sodium salt 9 out of 20 elderly hypertensive patients experienced an 11-point drop in their daytime systolic blood pressure.

That’s because natural sea salt – which is rich in natural potassium, magnesium and sodium – actually helps to normalize blood pressure levels. Your body needs sodium as an essential nutrient and your body cannot produce its own sodium. Salt is basically sodium chloride and sodium ions – both necessary for the survival of all known living creatures, including humans.

Whole Natural Salt is Different

Chloride ions from natural sources increase your body’s ability to absorb heart healthy potassium and magnesium. Chloride helps balance stomach acidity, sustains healthy pH for the whole body, and increases the elimination of CO2 from your blood, preventing acidosis.

Standard table salt loses its natural qualities during the manufacturing and refining process. Refined sodium chloride (labeled as table salt) does not work this way. Table salt had all its trace elements refined away. Your body cannot use the pure salt effectively, and the salt becomes a disruptor of natural processes.

Adding natural salt to your drinking water helps you control the electrolyte balance and even supply the trace elements. Without these, your body cannot manage effectively the cellular metabolic processes. One of the early symptoms of rising cellular toxin levels is, you guessed it, high blood pressure.
