Adrenal fatigue refers to your adrenal gland’s inability to produce the proper amount of hormones required by your body. The most common symptom is loss of energy.

The Critical Steps to Overcoming Adrenal Fatigue:

  1. Almost all of us are overloaded with toxins. We are constantly exposed to potentially dangerous toxins through the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. An optimally functioning detoxification system is necessary for preventing disease and providing good health.
  2. All disease is the direct result of accumulating toxins in the body. Unless and until you clean out your insides, diseases can only be in remission, prepared to resurface. And disease is not a thing to be removed, cured or killed. It is a process, a remedial action to be left to your immune system to deal with.

Dietary Recommendations

There is no diet that is perfect for all people, so it’s critical to pay attention to your own body.Your body needs a variety of nutrients, so please avoid all extreme diets. Restriction is not a good idea. Follow a good variety of foods with with regular, sit-down, relaxed meals. Make the switch to organic food, whenever possible.

Control Your Blood Sugar

Eat within the first hour upon awakening, and always before becoming hungry. If you get hungry, you’ve allowed yourself to run out of fuel (low blood sugar or hypoglycemia), which places additional stress on your adrenal glands.

Eat a small meal or snack every three to four hours. Eat a very small snack near bedtime.

Overeating, or an excessive ratio of carbohydrates to protein results in excess secretion of insulin, which often leads to intervals of hypoglycemia. To normalize blood sugar, your adrenals secrete more cortisol and adrenaline. It follows that an excessive intake of carbohydrates often leads to excessive secretion of cortisol. This contributes to chronic cortisol depletion and consequently, adrenal exhaustion.

In order to stabilize blood sugar, you must maintain a balance between two hormones, glucagon and insulin, which are produced by your pancreas. Protein in your diet causes the production of glucagon, and carbohydrates produce insulin. When excess carbohydrates are eaten, your body produces large quantities of insulin and little glucagon. This high level of insulin results in more fat being formed and stored.

When insulin is high and glucagon is low, your adrenals are called upon to produce more cortisol to help raise blood sugar in the absence of adequate glucagon. This excess cortisol production contributes to adrenal fatigue.

The Role of Fat

A small amount of fat (butter or cold pressed vegetable/seed oil, up to one tsp.) should be a part of every meal. This helps control the rate of entry of glucose (blood sugar) into your bloodstream.

Additional Supplementation Therapies

Siberian ginseng supports adrenal glands: a great tonic to help deal with stress.

The herb suma, found in the rainforest of South America has been reported to be useful in restoring glandular function and balancing the endocrine system, increasing energy levels and rejuvenating the spirit.

Licorice Root has traditionally been used to support the adrenals. This herb is very sweet and is not recommended if you are diabetic.

Pantothenic Acid (vitamin B5) is vital for adrenal hormone production, and is recommended in supporting the adrenal glands.

DHEA is a hormone precursor, produced by the adrenal glands. Leading health experts believe that after the age of 25, the body’s ability to produce DHEA declines, and supplementation can help increase energy and counteract the effects of stress.

Lifestyle Changes

It is necessary to grow out of adrenal fatigue by improving your values and attitudes: a critical aspect in every single case. Negative thinking (worry, fear, anger, etc.) add stress and will eventually tear down your body.

Many techniques are available to shift your thinking (inspirational books, tapes, seminars & therapies). There is no single answer right for everyone.

  • First, slow down and start listening to your body.
  • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths… often.
  • Let go of any resentment, blame, guilt, worries and fears. They can impair your adrenal glands.
  • Rest and sleep are extremely important. Plan for 9 hours of sleep, for at least a few years. There is no substitute for adequate rest. At times, more may be needed. Sleep is not a waste of time.
  • Try taking a hot bath with lavender or neroli oil before bed. These oils help to calm frazzled nerves, promote a feeling of calmness, and a restful sleep.
  • Vigorous exertion depletes the adrenals, but gentle walking is beneficial. Exercise to relax, rather than to build muscles. Deep breathing and stretching, yoga or Tai chi do not deplete the body.
  • Clean up your environment. Replace toxic chemical products used in and around your house: nontoxic alternatives are available. Chemical hair dyes, bath, shampoos and skin care products can be toxic and need to be replaced.
  • Ventilate your house and purify the air. New construction is very toxic, so open the windows. Turn off televisions and computers when they are not in use, and sleep away from them. Use cell phones sparingly.
  • Spend some time in the sun every day. Contrary to some propaganda, sunshine is great for you. It is a nutrient and feels good.
  • Chiropractic, massage and reflexology can help reduce stress. Many natural therapies help realign and rebalance your body to enhance recovery.
