Podcast 077: Importance of Good Nutrition

Martin found one study that states 90% of North American Natives are diabetic. It all comes back to your body type. Some natives are genetically not equipped to digest carbohydrates. Historically, a native village would never have a bakery, but in medieval Germany you would see a bakery in every town.

We need to learn to eat right for our own particular body type. That is not just the blood type, but also the dominant glandular, and metabolic types.

In very general terms, we need to eat water-rich foods. They will contribute to your health and not to your problems. Fresh fruit and raw or steamed vegetables are the way to go… non-toxic, organic are always best. Please support your local, organic farmers!

When you eat simple and natural foods, properly prepared and combined, your body will be happy to restore and maintain vibrant health.

Podcast 077: Importance of Good Nutrition

This is the Life Enthusiast co-op podcast Restoring Vitality to You and to the Planet. Let’s join our host Scott Paton and Martin Pytela now.

Scott: Welcome back everybody you’re listening to the life enthusiast co-op podcast restoring vitality to you and to the planet. I’m your co-host Scott Paton along with Martin Pytela and we’ve been talking about health education and we have decided to go through a year-long program covering all the major components of health and last time we talked about cleansing and how important that is and this week we want to talk about nutrition. So Martin I know this subject is very dear to your heart.

Martin: Oh is it ever, literally and figuratively.

Scott: And it’s dear to mine too because as I mentioned previously on a number of occasions one of my sons came to live with me about a year ago and after about eight months he came up and he said you know dad I have lost 20 pounds and it was because he was way more active and there were less chips and milk shakes and fast food around. He said part of reason was because I had nothing to eat but apples and oranges and carrots, which isn’t 100% true but certainly better then potato chips, taco chips and pizza.

Martin: Precisely this whole thing ties back to the body types and lectin types. Most people are not aware of it. Just to give you an illustration I saw a study released that shows that 19% of North American Indians, Natives are diabetic and rising. The back ground level of Diabetes in our society is something like 2 or 3 percent.

Scott: I didn’t realize it was that different.

Martin: And it was rising and the reason for that is these people are genetically predisposed to not being able to deal with carbohydrates well.

Scott: So what you are saying is their forefathers basically were running around on horses hunting deer and buffalo and that sort of stuff and gathering some root vegetables, gathering fruits and berries and that sort of stuff.

Martin: Yes they are hunter gatherers.

Scott: So they never would go into an Indian village and see a bakery. You know you go to Germany and they have these magnificent bakeries with black forest cake and everything else, but you would never see that in North America in 1500 AD.

Martin: Mind you also need to point out you would not see horses there either, that is an invention that the Spaniards brought with them.

Scott: Is that right?

Martin: There were no horses in North America until the invasion.

Scott: Oh okay. Good thing it was 15 AD and not 1100 AD.

Martin: Still the point is that they are genetically not equipped to deal with carbohydrates in the form of grains, breads, pasta, spaghetti, potato chips all that is just a total no-no and yet that’s the foods that they can get especially because they live in areas that don’t have good grocery stores. That’s the other thing that really gets my dander up, in the inner cities you don’t have a good grocery store or all you have is a classic corner store with roll down shutters and strong grill to prevent break ins and all you can buy there is a bag of potato chips and a bottle of soda pop.

Scott: This is exactly what they don’t need to eat. What about people from a European background or a Chinese background or a Japanese background or East Indian background?

Martin: Well the two classic types, one of which the S type which is a person that should be eating mainly proteins or legumes or oily seeds and stuff like that. Whereas the P type should be eating mainly things like buckwheat and millet and have a hearty breakfast and they are very well capable of eating flesh foods and stuff like that. Let me give you an example, one type is a slow gentle hard to excite line backer usually strong usually doesn’t talk fast, talks slow and quiet and stuff like that. That is that person that should be able to deal with meat just fine because even though meat is stimulating this body type can handle that stimulation. The other type is the arms up in the air fast talking quick to action body type which comes from the Arabs and Jews and those types. They can handle things like figs and dates with no big problem.

Scott: And a little bit more sugar perhaps?

Martin: Yes they can handle sugar without getting Diabetes whereas the other type cannot. If you feed them a predominantly carbohydrate diet they suffer terribly. What we need to do is listen to the genetics and understand the blood type. If you have blood type O then that’s the old blood and you are a hunter gatherer and if you have blood type A or B or AB that’s one of the newer groups and you are probably better suited to not eating very much meat. You can be a vegetarian with greater ease than blood type O’s. They could be vegetarians but it’s not as easy.

Scott: So that is interesting so we may have people in our culture that want to be a certain way and run into problems basically because it runs counter to their genetics.

Martin: That’s what we have, there is a wonderful book written by Peter D’adamo called Eat Right for your Type and Eat Right Diet, I think there are three or four different books. I would recommend reading that or if you want some free information on the Life Enthusiast web site read some articles on Doctor Walter Last, you would find it under the articles, under Last and you would find it under metabolic types and metabolic pathways and metabolic diets. It’s displayed in detail. If you want just an over view let’s just stick with the simple for the most part concentrated foods shouldn’t be eaten in excess. Water-rich raw foods are not going to contribute to your problems, so fresh fruit, raw vegetable or steamed vegetables is the way to go. Of course now the nutrition, do you want to eat toxic vegetables or do you want to eat non toxic vegetables?

Scott: I would say non toxic.

Martin: I would hope so. Don’t eat carrots bathed in diazenon. If you want to eat a lot of carrots, go organic. Organic foods are readily available all over the place, so please support your organic farmers. Or better yet, go to your local farmer’s market and buy it there. When you buy at a store, the organically grown carrot may have been washed and soaked in chlorinated water, and all the soil based organisms that should still be on the surface of the carrot will have been washed off. If you don’t eat those sorts of things on a continuous basis your gut starts to deteriorate. The microbial culture that is in your intestine should be replenished all the time, so eat dirt. I’m not joking really we are supposed to eat some amount of dirt.

Scott: It funny because I know what my initial reaction was immediately is we want everything to be so clean and that is part of the problem.

Martin: One of the bigger enemies of children and their immune systems is this popularity of brands but Lysol had won the hearts and minds of a great many child minders. They advertise on television to spray the doorknobs and toilet seats and just get rid of all those germs. Well that doesn’t really do anything for you. All it does is make your immune system unprepared to deal with them when if finally encounters them.

Scott: We know one thing for sure don’t we? We will encounter them.

Martin: Yes all you have to do is travel to Mexico. You will encounter them and Montezuma will have a chat with you.

Scott: Have a little bit of revenge. One of the reasons why I wanted to talk about nutrition this week as well there was a study in the US was what parents were most concerned about when it came to their children and I thought immediately that they didn’t start smoking or they are not doing drugs or not getting each other pregnant. You had mentioned off the air about fast driving and getting into car accidents which is a real problem in my neighborhood, we are constantly have a news reports of people wrapping their cars around telephone poles and that sort of thing but none of those things were the major concern of the parents in this particular study. I think, it’s going to be in the news more as we move forward and the number one concern of parents was the obesity of their children.

Martin: I’m not surprised and it has two sources, one is the lower activity levels because the society is now tending more to computers and sitting at a desk and watching television and interacting with a console but thank god for the Wii that we have something. All we need to do now is children cannot play a game without sitting on a bicycle generating the electricity they require to run the game.

Scott: That would be a good way to do it.

Martin: Yeah dynamo and a battery. You cannot play on a computer that you have not powered with your own peddling.

Scott: It seems to me that aside from the fact that we are way less active compared to my generation or my grandparents listening to you talk it could also be the food that we give our kids, if we give them the wrong type of foods.

Martin: Absolutely the biggest, biggest by far in like order of magnitude is the intake of empty calories. You know nine teaspoons of sugar in 12 oz of a soft drink. I mean contemplate it.

Scott: I’ve mentioned previously about my son moving in with me over a year ago in six or eight months he had lost twenty pounds and one of the things that he drinks all the time is water because there is no coke in the fridge or Pepsi or seven-up or even juice. I don’t have any of that and when they want to drink something it’s going to be water and that hydrates them and they don’t get those empty calories.

Martin: Yes especially if the water has been structured, once you do some of the water structuring techniques and we have talked about them and have many displayed on the web site and it makes the water more hydrating and it makes a huge difference. It makes the water desirable.

Scott: And it tastes good and they like drinking good water, it is the bad water they have trouble drinking.

Martin: I’m reminded that just this past weekend my wife and I and her mom we were out for a drive and we went for lunch and we asked for water with the food and they brought three glasses of water and each one of us put our lips to it and tasted it and I just set it down instantly. It was just awful. I said to the waiter please take the water away it’s just not consumable. I got the strangest look and he said we have this other water; the bottled water that you could pay for. So empty calories number one, it’s in the soda drinks and also in all of the refined food anything that is fairly high carbohydrates you know the highest calorie count is in the high fructose corn syrup.

Scott: Yeah so watch out for that one.

Martin: If that is on the label of the product please don’t buy it, just don’t. This will probably be in breakfast cereals and crackers and in all kinds of drinks. It’s horrendous because it’s addictive, it’s stimulating and your body doesn’t even recognize it as sugar and yet it just loads the calories phenomenally.

Scott: It doesn’t even give you that spike is that what you mean?

Martin: No it is the opposite it’s just I might have misspoken in the sense that it adds a lot of calories and it makes things taste sweet and your metabolism doesn’t know how to handle it because it’s not a natural sugar. That should just end it right there. Unfortunately I am having a hard time expressing myself without sounding like a negative crazy health nut. I have a thought formed on the tip of my tongue and I am bout to say it, and then I think “oh no, I cannot say that!”.

Scott: I think you should just let loose Martin because what we are making available to our children is almost a crime in many cases and because we think we are doing them a favor and they are happy just chowing down on stuff or they are happy because it is loaded with empty calories it’s not doing them any favor. You had mentioned the epidemic of Diabetes in the first nations in North America and I think that’s a real problem and we have kids with ADD and ADHD and all these other letters that are given medication because they are really being forced to sit around and eat sugar and how do you expect that energy in their body without bouncing off the walls.

Martin: I really suspect a lot of these so called mental problems are caused by nutrition exactly the ADHD is probably an intolerance with dealing with too much carbohydrate in the diet.

Scott: And sitting around you know six year old boys or twelve year old boys sitting for eight hours in a closed environment without getting a chance to run it off. There was a school district that announced that they were doing away with recess. What they wanted to do was have the kids, for that 15 minutes indoors reading. I think we should all do reading, I’ve got no problem with reading I have a problem instead of letting them outside to run off all the energy they have.

Martin: That is really just sad.

Scott: It really is sad and I just look at my own son and he loves to ride his bike and I don’t have to tell him to do it and he will just ride for four hours in a day going up and down and doing different things on his bike and I have no problems with him. I think if I was forcing him to sit and be quiet for those four hours I would have nothing but problems.

Martin: Yeah he would have pent up energy ready to explode all over the place.

Scott: I think that people just don’t understand that. You can’t just give him an Oh Henry bar and tell him to sit and read a book, it just doesn’t work.

Martin: You know the second one is the acidity that these concentrated products create.

Scott: You talked about how important the pH balance in the body is.

Martin: Yeah and we will talk about it in our next episode the point is that gluten which is the protein in wheat, barley and rye is an acid forming substance and an acidic body tends towards depression. [boy was I wrong with this statement]

Scott: So we have this epidemic of depression as well.

Martin: I suspect that it is nutritional and I think that if we got people out of their offices and out of their homes into the field running around after they have had their salad for lunch they would be doing a whole lot better. So 75 to 80 percent of the food intake should be water rich, raw uncooked state. That means raw fruit, fresh fruit, salad; carrot sticks and apple pieces if it can be juiced and blended like smoothies it just must not be cooked.

Scott: We have talked about that a few times about the importance of eating living food.

Martin: That’s right and water rich foods so you don’t dehydrate. Also imagine this if you eat a gallon-size bowl of salad you cannot possibly find enough room to eat any chips and the amount of energy that it takes to chew down a gallon of salad and the energy it takes to digest a gallon of salad you will not have excess calories. If you eat a quart of ice cream or of a bowl of cereal with milk that is highly concentrated, calorie rich and instantly convertible into sugar [glucose]. All that is going to do is challenge your pancreas and cause you to put on weight before my eyes.

Scott: And that’s what happens to a lot of people too isn’t it?

Martin: That’s correct now the craving for sweets and carbohydrates especially later in the day is usually triggered by a lack of decent protein snack in the morning.

Scott: So part of the key is to make sure you get the right protein and that you get protein.

Martin: That’s right so things like hemp protein or vegetable type of protein, beans work really well those types of things work excellent or have an egg or two.

Scott: Get off to a good start. So we have covered an awful lot today about nutrition.

Martin: Unfortunately we have just peeked under the carpet; we have just rolled over a corner in this enormous room. This is a topic that could last us for about a year all by itself but its important. Important.

Scott: So if you want to know more about nutrition and nutrition principles you can go to www.Life-Enthusiast.com and click under health education. We have pages of more detailed information on nutrition and make sure you are reading for the right type of body that you have.

Martin: It’s important that you understand it because if you are trying to do the wrong thing all you are going to be very frustrated. I just want to say this Atkins diet is a wonderful example of not understanding why something works. That diet works for a body type that needs to eat a lot of meat but only for that body type. So you can’t prescribe one diet for everybody. There is this one diet that puts everyone on grapefruits well very nice that works fine for people who can handle a lot of sugar but it is an absolute murderer for people who should be eating a lot of meat. Understand that there are differences between body types so eat right for your type.

Scott: So if you wanted to listen to previous pod casts for the Life Enthusiast co-op then you can head over to LifeEnthusiast.podomatic.com and we’ve got over 70 archived pod cast episodes that you can listen to.
