Podcast 124: The Dirty Dozen – Part 2

Today Martin and Scott discuss the last 6 of “The Dirty Dozen” including caffeine and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

Caffeine is an addictive stimulant that’s added to so very many things (soft drinks, gum, diet pills, pain-relievers). A little bit of stimulants –  if you’re feeling sluggish – is OK. But if you need a cup of coffee and a cigarette to have a bowel movement, you’re in trouble.

Withdrawal from caffeine can cause headaches, irritability, sleepiness and lethargy, among so many others. Take a look and try a superfood to give you a boost that won’t let you down like caffeine and sugar will.

Podcast 124: The Dirty Dozen – Part 2

Scott: Welcome back everyone you are listening to Life Enthusiast podcast online radio network restoring vitality to you and to the planet and last time we started talking about the dirty dozen and we go through the first six this time we are going to bring Martin Pytela back on with us to talk about the last six of the dirty dozen. Hey Martin how are you doing this week?

Martin: I am doing great Scott clearly we haven’t finished because I saw yet another vending machine out there and I saw a commercial on television and it was pushing stuff loaded with the wrong ingredients clearly I have not recruited enough enthusiasts or vigilantes that are going to run around the planet shutting down these immoral operations. They don’t deserve to exist.

Scott: Well they belong to the dirty dozen for a good reason because they cause more problems than they solve and as long as we keep taking the simple way out and the easy and cheap way out than we are going to be paying the price down the line and you had mentioned something about garbage in the ocean and I believe they found a garbage pile in the ocean the size of France I believe it was in the Pacific ocean and it just sort of accumulated by tides and waves into one spot and you know if we are in a recession and we need some jobs let’s get some people to clean up the mess that we have made and spend money that well rather than a hundred million dollar bonuses for people on wall street that handle our money but anyway that is a different story.

Martin: Or making land mines you know I keep thinking of these poor little pirates in Africa who are having to turn themselves into these enterprising folks that are running around on gun boats trying to hijack the ships that are floating by and I am thinking who made the guns and who sold them to guns you know if we just kept them with bows and arrows than we would be okay.

Scott: Well the scary thing is we sold them the guns and we gave them a loan to buy the guns which we then forgave so last time we were talking about the dirty dozen these are twelve foods or additives that we think you need to avoid at all costs and we started talking about artificial sweeteners and then refined sugar was number two and then monosodium glutamate MSG was number three and artificial coloring and then the last two we talked about was BHA and BHT and sodium nitrate and nitrites and that sort of thing so I think it is time to talk about next the final six of the dirty dozen.

Martin: Okay let’s get into it number seven caffeine.

Scott: Oh no all the coffee drinkers head for the hills!

Martin: And all the coffee drinkers too and all the chocolate eaters and cigarette smokers it all comes from the same family essentially we were talking about these additives these stimulants it is an addictive stimulant that is added to soft drinks, gum, diet pills, pain relievers you know a little bit of stimulation if you are feeling sluggish is okay but if you have to rely on your one and a half cups of coffee and a cigarette you are in trouble.

Scott: And if you are not careful caffeine can cause things like birth defects, miscarriages, heart disease, depression, behavioral change, insomnia and if you are going through withdrawal symptoms are going to be headaches, irritability, sleeplessness and lethargy.

Martin: Well you know it happens with people going through cigarette withdrawal or coffee withdrawal or something similar and they are just ready to bite their head off.

Scott: Not pleasant, okay let’s get onto number eight.

Martin: Yes that is an amazing one that is called the olestra or OE which is an artificial fat this is a fat that is not a fat you know like it is a calorie free fat substitute so in this crazy world that produces fat content you know we had this misdirected nutritionist decided that fat was bad for us so the industrial engineers went to work and said I can make things feel like fat in your mouth because it is the fat in your mouth that provides the creaminess and smoothness and fullness of taste that fat gives to the food that you eat you know the difference between a moist steak that has been done with all the fat in it there or is a piece of stewing meat that resembles something that could be on the bottom of your shoe right shoe leather versus juicy steak right. The difference between the two would be the fat content. so anyway this olestra has been used to give the food a better mouth feel while reducing the fat content stay away from it and here goes BVO product vegetable oil.

Scott: I have actually never heard of that one.

Martin: Well a two percent solution of BVO can poison a child says this thing here it is used because of the flavor of it and it again enhances the flavors you don’t need to take too much of it to get into trouble. I guess this goes to just a general fact refined oils and refined fats because refined means we have stripped out of it the omega 3’s and 6’s those are the ones you need the most. The omega 3’s are the most fragile fats they are the ones that prevent you from aging those are the ones that if you supplement them your wrinkles go away and if your body gets them you lose weight but unfortunately if the cooking oil is on a shelf in the grocery store in an ordinary bottle it had to have been refined there is no other way around it because if you leave that it is rancid within days so they had to have stripped it out.

Scott: What is scary about this one is that it is not required by the FDA to be listed on food labels because you don’t even know if you are getting it half the time.

Martin: Yeah that is nasty; okay the next big one partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Scott: This is a good one.

Martin: Well this is the one known as shortening or margarine or of course poly saturated oils. So there is a big movement about eliminating hydrogenated oils or hydrogenated fats out of the food but here is what the regulation says you can put zero hydrogenated fat on the product or the bag so long as it is less than 0.5 gram per serving gee I don’t remember the exact definition but what it amounts to is this if the serving of potato chips was found to be one ounce and you have a ten ounce bag and you are getting half a gram oh yeah that’s it that is the number half a gram of hydrogenated fat or trans fats as they are known now in the serving then you can say zero trans fat on the bag but you are not going to eat just one ounce of it you are going to eat six ounces of it so now you have three grams of hydrogenated fats and that is not a zero.

Scott: Yeah I don’t understand this whole idea like zero is zero people who are mathematicians are pretty clear on what that is and to be able to say let’s just make this and do this in such a way that we can say if it is less than this then we don’t have to put it on that is just criminal.

Martin: Yes that is precisely what you get but unfortunately the dance between the regulators FDA and the food manufacturers who they struggle at this, it is difficult because they need to keep the prices down and be competitive and satisfy the taste requirements of the addicted masses and they compete with one another so they get there kicking and screaming and so they have this negotiation and they come to this deal, a plea bargain okay I will let you say zero if there is half a gram or less per serving and a serving is ridiculously small and off we go. Zero trans fats my ass.

Scott: And who can ever have ten potato chips.

Martin: Yeah especially when they have flavor on it like BBQ and if you check the dye that is MSG.

Scott: Okay number eleven, what is number eleven?

Martin: Pesticide that is you know they are all over this is the stuff that kills rats and other pests you know well it should be pesticides and herbicides it is the stuff that you pour on carrots like the asinine or the stuff you pour on green peppers or strawberries unless they are organic they are heavily sprayed with lots of chemical stuff you know the softer or more watery the berry or vegetable the more they will be loaded with nasty stuff unless they are organic.

Scott: Well every year more than two billion pounds of pesticides are applied on food like ten pounds per person per year.

Martin: You know the scariest thing about that is cumulative and it is getting in our sewers and our rivers and our oceans and it doesn’t disappear it just keeps adding and it doesn’t decompose it just stays what it is.

Scott: And these are things our bodies can’t remove.

Martin: No once they are in us they are in us. Well I recently watched a study about blood drawn from an umbilical cord of freshly born infants and they actually analyzed it and there were hundreds of chemicals in each one. Children are not being born with it and the other thing was the chemical analysis of a mother’s breast milk you know rich in fat and again rich in these toxins, not good. Anyway somehow we need to convince the manufacturers that they need to go out of business because there is no other option. This must stop, we cannot have perfect lawns, we cannot have a pest free life and environment it is wrong and the direction is wrong. If we don’t stop it will kill us.

Scott: So here we are at the final one, the dirtiest of the dirty dozen or the number 12 for the dirty dozen depending on what you think.

Martin: Genetically modified organisms.

Scott: GMO’s

Martin: This is the craziest thing we are introducing into nature these creations we don’t understand. This is becoming quite visible in soy and corn where the indigenous corn in Mexico is becoming invaded by the genetically modified corn because corn is pollinated by wind you know the pollen just flies down from one field to another and it’s happening that they are starting to see these weird three headed corns you know and all kinds of broken stuff and what we don’t know is what happens to the bees that are pollinating something that has I don’t know what it is a sunflower or something like that and it gets pollinated somehow with something artificial or genetically modified and they drag it into their bee hive and then five generations down what has it done.

Scott: Good question and I think that is one of the problems we have with bees today.

Martin: Maybe it’s hard to tell it could be the electromagnetic pollution all over everywhere creating this cloud of EMF that could be significant but it could be. There was an experiment done with cats I am trying to remember I think it was short hair anyway this fellow was feeding cats only pasteurized milk exclusively and on fourth generation the cats were sterile and unable to reproduce. You know like first generation some genetic mutation and then second generation significant genetic problems and then third generation most had genetic problems and then fourth generation completely infertile.

Scott: So I am wondering how many generations or if we are seeing that now.

Martin: Well with humans we are seeing it a lot we are seeing dentition problems like we used to have full healthy teeth and now orthodontics are pretty much a requirement and in some countries where they don’t do it you see people with these horrendous looking teeth that are just all over the map right. That’s a degenerative change. Ears, small ears especially the ears missing the lower lobes that is a degenerative feature, the wisdom teeth forming to peoples jaws that is a degenerative feature.

Scott: When we are talking about the genetic stuff to we are talking about something different than hybridization where you take two plants and you put one branch on another branch and a new thing grows kind of thing and that is not genetics.

Martin: We are talking about genetic selection right where you would take the best looking apple and pollinate it on the strongest apple tree you had where you would develop apricots that are bigger or sweeter or apricots that would grow in northern latitudes or that sort of selective breeding. That is just fine, selective breeding it narrows the genetic pool and creates problems especially in cows because these days they raise just one prized bull and harvest his semen and then they have that cow being the father of a huge number of calves and now it is common for one bull to service something like a thousand cows. That is not natural you know like that is narrowing the genetic pool.

Scott: Significantly.

Martin: Well anyway that is still just one species but when we talk about genetic modification we are not grafting a cold water fish into a tomato or we are grafting herbicide resistance into corn so roundup ready I forget which plant it was soy or corn or something like that what that means is that you can plant this and you can spray it with roundup and roundup is a systemic herbicide that kills everything except this genetically modified thing that is resistant to roundup to stay alive in a field that is free of other competing plants.

Scott: Ouch.

Martin: Yeah this thing will bear fruit many generations down the line and we have no idea what this thing is going to do to us. I don’t know how to say it, playing god is just wrong.

Scott: There you go.

Martin: So instead go organic and drink filtered pure water that is properly structured and clustered, pay attention to what you are eating, chew it well and get a high powered blender those are really wonderful things. They will do all the chewing for you and then when you are drinking the smoothies chew those not because you need to chew them but because you need to saturate them with your saliva and sleep well. Sleep is needed, and get one of those electronic suppressing devices or EMF suppressing devices. You know we sell a few of those but whatever you can get, get some.

Scott: And turn off the TV because all that advertising will brainwash you.

Martin: It might like they wouldn’t be putting it on the TV if it didn’t.

Scott: Yep they get a positive response, which means you are getting a negative impact.

Martin: Well you are being seduced, seduced into doing things that are not in your best interest because the people who have the budgets to advertise on television shouldn’t be on television. It is what it has become if the company advertises on television it automatically means they shouldn’t be there and it automatically means their products shouldn’t be touched.

Scott: Yep

Martin: So now I’ve got myself all depressed so let’s try and say something s cheerful, what do you know Scott?

Scott: We are still breathing, it’s a beautiful sunny day and it is just interesting the challenges everyone gets in their lives and our challenge is to get people to think about what they put in their mouths.

Martin: Yes the old saying goes are you digging your grave with your teeth and most of us are. Folks pay attention, I hate to be such an activist but I can’t help it.

Scott: Well someone has too.

Martin: Okay well this is Martin from Life Enthusiast at www.life-enthusiast.com and 1-866-543-3388 and we are serving you to restore vitality to you and to the planet. Thank-you for listening.

Scott: Bye-bye everybody.
