Lactose Intolerance

Symptoms of Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance can cause nausea, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and chronic flatulence. For many, this may have become an everyday thing. But its not normal and can lead to serious health risks.

Many people in western developed countries eat large amounts of processed foods and may have come to accept chronic flatulence, constipation and bloating as normal. This is not a normal way to live, and should be investigated. Left untreated, problems with malabsorption (like iron deficiency or chronic dehydration) can arise. Further neglect can lead to anemia and even osteoporosis. And the symptoms with the associated risks increase with age. It must be investigated.

They are the building blocks of systemic proteins, which are present in all your body tissues, including skin, nails, hair, blood, bone and brain cells. Thousands of different systemic proteins are constantly being manufactured from 20 different amino acids. Your body can manufacture 10 of these amino acids, the other 10 are considered essential, meaning they must be acquired from your diet.

Calcium Consumption

America has the highest rate of milk consumption, and the highest consumption of calcium supplements – yet also the highest occurrence of osteoporosis (calcium loss) in the Western world.

Industrial, pasteurized milk is acid forming in your body. Your body will eliminate this acid by taking calcium from your bones. And the result can be osteoporosis. Consuming raw milk (unpasteurized) or kefir does not create an acidic environment in your body, nor calcium loss.

Milk products make food taste good and do contain some calcium. However the calcium found in dairy foods is in a form that is not easily absorbed by your body. Therefore many servings must be eaten (recommended three servings per day) to provide enough calcium for our needs. This amount can lead to an acidic body, and actual calcium loss, as explained above.

Consumption of this much dairy food in a week means that all other dairy components (cholesterol, fat & lactose) are being absorbed at the same time. To reduce fat intake, people switch to low fat varieties, and these contain even more lactose. Skim milk and low fat milk products are usually supplemented with additional milk solids, sugars and other derivatives to give them substance, and make them more appealing.

Especially among elderly people, switching to low-fat milk (with its higher levels of lactose) can bring on severe diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Don’t Use Calcium Supplements from an Antacid

The problem with the most common forms of calcium supplementation is the lack of absorption. This depends on many factors such as the type of calcium used (carbonate, citrate or chelate), amount of protein in your diet, and cofactors such as magnesium, boron, silica and vitamin D.

Ideally, your intake of calcium and magnesium should be equal. This allows proper absorption of both minerals, leading you to far better health. The majority of North Americans get enough calcium from diet, but their intake of magnesium and silicon is often inadequate, causing calcium malabsorption.

The New England Journal of Medicine reported a study in which postmenopausal women were given an antacid to neutralize the acid that is produced by a high protein diet. Researchers saw significant improvements in the bone retention of calcium & phosphorus, in less than 3 weeks. Unfortunately, many of the women had digestive problems resulting from this therapy. Antacids have been shown to seriously reduce nutrient bioavailability. A more sensible conclusion would have us eat less protein, and more fruits & vegetables.

We now know that other factors like caffeine, smoking and physical activity all play a part in maintaining appropriate levels of calcium in our bodies. It is therefore always better to take a holistic approach to a balanced diet and lifestyle.
