Inositol is sometimes called vitamin B8 but it's not actually considered a vitamin, because it can be synthesized by the body. It's found in many foods: cereals with high bran content, nuts and beans. And fruit, especially cantaloupe, melons and oranges.
Doses of 12–18 g/day have been shown to be effective in double-blind trials, as an intervention for anxiety, extreme low moods and obsessive behaviors.
Plays an important role as the structural basis for a number of secondary messengers in eukaryotic cells, including inositol phosphates, phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylinositol phosphate (PIP) lipids.
