Candida albicans is a yeast that is naturally present in your body, in ever-changing amounts. In some people, candida can easily overgrow, and this is the foundation of a multitude of ailments and diseases. Most people think that they have to "fight" candida as if it were some external invasion. It is not. It is your body's reaction to a cellular terrain problem and when you correct the digestive imbalance, the candida problem will go away.
Every body has a certain normal level of candida, typically found in the digestive tract; which extends from your mouth to your rectum. A healthy level of Candida Albicans is kept in check by friendly bacteria in your intestines.
Typically, candida is concentrated in the throat, mouth or vagina, and often found in moist areas of the body, including intestines, other mucous membranes, and also damp skin.
When candida overgrows, it develops rhizoids (long root-like structures) that are invasive and can penetrate your mucous membranes. When this happens, the boundary between your intestinal tract and the rest of your circulatory system can break down. This would allow partially digested proteins to travel into your bloodstream, assaulting your immune system.
Symptoms of candida overgrowth will vary from person to person, and fluctuate in severity. While some symptoms come and go, others may last a long time. Some are visible (such as skin rashes or abdominal bloating), some are invisible (such as joint pain, lethargy).
Other commonly known names for Candida Albicans overgrowth are Candidiasis, yeast infection, oral or vaginal thrush, and vaginitis (the other common vaginal yeast is monilia).
The real problem with overgrowth of candida is what it does to you over time. When left alone, candida grows into the rhizome stage. It sprouts into a long, finger-like fungus that punches holes in your entire digestive tract (leaky gut or permeable bowel syndrome), allowing toxins to enter your bloodstream. Then your liver and immune system must deal with these toxins, so they get overloaded and clogged, as does your lymphatic system (due to partially digested fats).
Digestion slows down even further and you end up with a vicious cycle that creates even more candida and liver congestion and leaky gut. Candida eats sugars and excretes alcohol. Your liver is stressed from dealing with all the alcohol. Many people call brain fog "die off" and often die-off is involved, but really, it is all those toxins passing the blood brain barrier. Whenever you feel fatigue and brain fogged, cleanse the colon.
How Candida Thrives - It's Opportunistic
Candida is a crafty and opportunistic creature. It can manage to hide (sometimes for years) in parts of your body where traditional therapies don't always reach (in your joints, for instance).
It can be quite easy to become unbalanced (candida overgrowth) and quite difficult to regain balance. If you lose proper immune protection, candida transforms from a beneficial yeast into a harmful fungus.
The causes include antibiotic use, chlorine in drinking and washing water, a diet with too much sugar, alcohol & refined foods, stress, environmental toxins and hormone changes. Mostly, candida thrives on foods that are common to the typical American diet. These foods can alter intestinal terrain unfavorably and create the perfect environment for candida overgrowth.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline) destroy the healthful bacteria, which control the candida population. For example, Lactobacillus acidophilus competes with C. albicans for space and nutrients in the intestinal tract. It also releases acid, which makes the environment less favorable for Candida growth; and even feeds off of the Candida directly. When Lactobacillus acidophilus is attacked by antibiotics, Candida proliferates and can change to its pathogenic micelle form. After prolonged (several months or more) or frequent (more than 3 times in a year) broad-spectrum antibiotic use, Candidiasis symptoms may start to appear in a matter of months or even days and often linger for life if untreated, especially if one regularly consumes poultry, eggs, meats and/or milk since these usually contain antibiotics (and steroids, see (2) directly below). Chemical preservatives in food also support Candida overgrowth.
Chlorine kills off beneficial intestinal flora. It is advisable to drink water that has been carbon filtered to remove most of the chlorine. Swimming in public pools adds to the chlorine load, as does showering in hot chlorinated water.
Candida albicans flourishes on sugar, and your body produces sugar from everything you consume. Too much sugar (from any source) allows your naturally occurring internal candida to overgrow. It also tends to overgrow very quickly when fed simple sugars: foods that have a high glycemic index, such as soft drinks, alcohol, sweets, white pasta and baked goods.
The nutrient-poor, low-bulk, high-refined carbohydrate diets of most North Americans will, over a period of years, transform a healthy large intestine into a lifeless pipe caked with layers of encrusted fecal matter (the site of constant putrefaction, fermentation, rancidification, home for toxin-inducing pathogenic bacteria) and an excellent environment for the growth of candida. The high-refined carbohydrate diet also serves as a very desirable food for candida, which further entrenches it within the microscopic crevices of encrusted fecal matter. The small intestine, housing a more fluid chem., does not become so caked with old fecal matter as it does with mucus. This also encourages candida proliferation.
Hormonal changes in the body, as with hormone therapy, pregnancy and the contraceptive pill can trigger a yeast infection in people whose immune systems are under challenge (e.g. stress).
Women are generally more susceptible to Candidiasis than men for several reasons:
- Female hormonal levels are constantly fluctuating and sustained high levels of estrogen can occur, which tends to impair immune system function.
- Candida albicans growth is stimulated by the female hormone progesterone. Its levels are elevated during pregnancy and in the second half of each menstrual cycle. Synthetic progestins are found in oral contraceptives and also contribute to candida overgrowth.
- The female anatomy lends itself to the ready migration of candida from the rectum to the genitourinary system. Vaginal yeast infections are a common result.
Weakened Immune System
