My Personal Experience with EFAs to Heal Pain
This story begins with unexplained pain on my chest.
Not in my chest, but on my chest.
Have you ever experienced this kind of thing?
One day you wake up and something different hurts?
Anyway, one day I wake up, and my chest hurts. After a week or so, the pain was so bad that I was having trouble just brushing my teeth. So I went to see a doctor. This highly educated and kind doctor told me that there is cartilage that attaches my ribs to my breastplate. And this cartilage is inflamed. Who knew that could happen?!
Now here’s the really lousy part that you can probably see coming…
The doctor had no idea what was causing that inflammation, but he sure did have an anti-inflammatory drug for the pain! So in my uninformed state, I took this prescription drug, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID). People take these types of drugs all the time, (Tylenol/acetaminophen and Advil/ibuprofen are the most common) for all sorts of inflammatory conditions that give them pain. And these drugs really do put a “Band-Aid on the owie”. My pain was gone, if I took the drugs. When the drugs wore off, the pain came back.
After a few months of taking NSAIDs for my unexplained inflammation, I was still very uninformed… until I came across an article about my particular NSAID. This article stated that my NSAID was causing heart attacks and strokes in many people! Of course, I quit taking the drug, but still needed to get rid of my pain.
At this point, I realized that it was not the pain that I needed to get rid of, it was the underlying inflammation that had to go! So I had a conversation with my caring and very thorough chiropractor. He was not sure what was causing my pain either, but loaned me a book about healing with foods, and suggested that I might find a solution in there.
Lo and behold… there was my answer in black and white! A whole section was dedicated to foods that are high in essential fatty acids, and these foods are natural anti-inflammatories – they reduce inflammation. I started taking Fish Oil Capsules, and after only about 2 months… You guessed it… My Pain Was Gone!
I know that 2 months might seem like a long time to get rid of pain, when you could just take a pill from the pharmacy. There is a critical difference between permanently removing the cause, and masking the symptom, which is only temporary. When you only mask the symptom, the problem will always come back to haunt you. Why would you take drugs to mask the pain of inflammation, when natural EFAs work to remove the cause of your pain?
Big Warning ~ About Pain Relief Medications
Pain is your body’s warning signal, telling you that something is wrong and you need to make some changes. And millions of people use Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs like Advil and Tylenol), despite their well-known side effects.
NSAIDs mess with Mother Nature and can cause more grief that they’re worth. Research indicates that these drugs actually accelerate the progression of joint destruction, causing more problems down the road. NSAIDs work by blocking enzymes that help produce inflammatory compounds. This is how they reduce inflammation and pain.
But also… NSAIDs block enzymes that manufacture your cartilage!
You may be temporarily pain-free, but arthritis is silently getting worse! Several clinical studies have shown that NSAIDs are associated with the acceleration of osteoarthritis and increased joint destruction. They help you feel better by reducing inflammation and pain, but they don’t stop diseases from progressing. They cannot prevent damage from arthritic conditions, like bone and joint destruction. Tips for Eating Healthy Fats to Reduce Pain
- Eliminate processed foods.

In the 1960s, Americans ate 45% of their calories from fat, and only 13% were obese. Now, most of us get about 33% of our calories from fat, and 34% of us qualify as obese!
One thing is certain… you cannot go wrong with whole foods. When you feed your body natural whole foods, it knows exactly what to do with all parts of the whole food. It just knows. It’s natural, and the result is a healthy body. When you eat processed foods, free radicals form… toxins build up… sickness results. Processed foods act as poison in your body. All types of discomforts and disease can result from eating lots of processed foods, (especially bad fats!) from arthritis to cancer.. Seriously! Which disease gets you first all depends on your own personal weak tendencies.
Important to Know About Yourself…
If you’ve tried a low fat diet and felt miserable doing it, you have a body type that NEEDS more healthy fats to create energy. Some people need MUCH MORE fats and proteins than others. To know if this is you, try eating a breakfast of meat and eggs. After an hour or two, if you feel great, then this is your type of diet. Or try this… eat a breakfast of fruit and after an hour or two, if you feel great, then you need less protein in your diet than others. Just remember that you still need healthy fats!
